The custom of carving and giving Welsh Lovespoons originated in Wales many years ago, the oldest surviving example dating back to around 15650. According to Welsh folklore these hand-carved spoons were traditionally made by young men and offered as romantic gifts to the girls they loved. They would spend many hours carving the spoon from a single piece of wood. The spoons would incorporate different symbols which pass on messages of love and intentions. Today it is quite common to give lovespoons to family and friends for eddings, birthdays, anniversaries, christenings and other special events.
A few of these symbols are
Ball in cage - number of children desired, or years together Bells - Marriage Double Hearts - Shared love Flowers - Courtship Horse Shoe - Good luck Keys - Home and hearth Rings - Wedding proposal Single Heart - My heart is yours Wheel - Willingness to work for a loved one
